Yes it seems like ND has you going in the right direction as far as correct u joints.
Lengthening or building your own d/s is not a easy effort IMO. Just cutting the old one apart you can blow yourself up.....well worth the $ to take it to a shop, and that way you get it speed balanced.
1st need to figure out if you do for sure have the correct d/s and that you DO have a lift kit. And that is the reason your current d/s is too short.
