I have a 2001 F450 7.3 chassis cab with just over 100k. I have a new problem...
So far on two different occasions the service engine came on followed by a loss of power under a load and white smoke from the exhaust. Took it to the shop the first time, they determined it to be a dirty air filter, which seemed odd since it just happened all of a sudden. They changed air & fuel filter, problem gone- for two weeks. Came back yesterday, any ideas?
Did the 01 f450 chassis cabs have the metal tank delam issue? Maybe...
My 01 F-350 cab and chassis did have a tank that delaminated and plugged up my fuel system. Not sure about the 450 but I suspect they had the same 40 gallon rear mounted tank.
You are describing the symptoms of low fuel pressure, and the SES light is usually ICP-related - because the ICP has nothing but air to push against. This causes very low atomization of the fuel, and it pretty much comes out the tail pipe as vapor - like a demonic humidifier. The truck will also buck, shake, and knock, giving the appearance of an engine trying to fight its way out the hood.
The fuel filter might have solved the problem last time, if your fuel tank is steel and the interior coating is delaminating - it sloughs off and clogs the fuel filter. If you have a plastic tank, the fuel line quick-connects and internal screens are suspect. If you don't have cottage cheese in your fuel filter, remove the outlet hose from your fuel pump and blow air into it with a compressor and a rubber-cone nozzle to clear all screens. If the problem clears up and later returns, you are due for a Hutch mod. Info on this abundantly available here with a search... I think I even put a link in my signature.
If you have the steel tank it is almost certainly delaminating, the fix is to replace it with a poly tank. My buddy didn't have the funds to buy a replacement so we dropped and "cleaned" the tank, eliminated the mixing chamber in the tank, and installed the filter in this pic I borrowed from Tugly before the pump. He's run it this way for over a year and just cleans that pre filter every couple months.
Blowing some shop air back to the tank like Tugly said will generally let you know if that is where the fuel restriction is cause it will free up some flow and run tons better..till it clogs back up.
