Help! - fuel filter blowing apart!

2002 7.3 Powerstroke extended cab. Three weeks ago two new filters were blown right off their mount by excessive pressure (coming from where?). Then a third filter of another brand was installed and truck ran fine for the three weeks and about 300-400 miles until today when it blew apart again. The truck had a new IPR valve installed back in January and when the second filter blew three weeks ago the transfer fuel pump failed and was replaced. Anybody can tell me what's going on here? Thanks in advance for any help you can give, Tom.

I heard of a guy on that did the FPR shim and blew the top off the filter bowl. I'd just be curious of how much fuel pressure its taking to blow it up like that.

on a stock fuel system there should be no more then 70 psi...over that and things start to break....

Ricks got a good idea with a plugged FPR. There's a spring loaded poppet valve that allows excess fuel to return to the tank. The other thing to check is a cracked lid or bowl that isn't allowing a good seal. You can also verify that you only have 1 beveled o-ring under the lid, and pull the filter out to make sure you don't have the round rubber gasket from the bottom of the last fuel filter in there causing too tight of a fit.

Let us know what you find.

With a clogged fuel pressure regulator, it is possible to generate well over 100 psi fuel pressure because the fuel pump is now dead headed - no fuel return at all.
VERY hard on the pump too, not enough fuel volume going through the pump to keep it properly cooled off.
The fuel pressure regulator is located on the port side of the fuel filter housing with that short piece of rubber hose, then a steel line.
Held down with two torx screws. Remove that housing, (don't drop the spring or the little piston or you will be buying a new assembly). Make sure that nothing is blocked up there.
