I have a buddy that just picked up a 79 f-250 and it has an Explorer bag on the hood but says Ranger on the bed bages. I thought the bed should say Explorer also. I wondered if the bed has been replaced or something but it looks all original. I was wanting to know if you guys could tell us what the Explorer package had that was different from the rest of the trucks. His Vin has a E in the Vin number also. Thanks guys.
It might have a bed off an older truck. The earlier years of dents had Ranger on the besides. Most explorer's had the Explorer emblem on the bedsides, but not all as far as I can remember.
My 73 had a Ranger XLT "bed" badge below the dent trim, but none of my 77-79's did....as far as I know. Is the fuel filer cap exposed or have a flap? That is a sign of the bed year.
I bet different hood, cause that is a real easy swap.
My 79' had ranger fender badges and an explorer hood ornament. All sheet metal is original, although the hood ornament may not be. Also should note it had the explorer stripe package.
Rich: Some people refer to Styleside quarter panels as bedsides or fenders.

The E has nothing to do with an Explorer. The 5th digit of the VIN is the assembly plant code: E = Mahwah NJ Assembly Plant.
1973/76 Stylesides have exposed fuel caps, 1977/79 Stylesides have fuel doors.
