There's a good reason 72 bedside Explorer badges are not as common as the other badges. There aren't any They didn't start putting them on the boxes until 73. Prior to that, all they used were hood ornaments and the glove box door nameplate. The store on the website here has listings on all the badges.
I hate to disagree, but I have to. I know where a '72 Explorer is sitting right now, and trust me...I am trying to talk the guy into selling it...it has some great parts on it.
I have to disagree with the comment aboout them not putting Explorer badges on the bedsides until 73. I own a 72 with factory original Explorer badging on the bed ONLY, nothing on the glove box or hood. I also have a 69 Explorer that did not have anything on the hood or bed, only the glove box. I have never seen an early Explorer that had any badging anywhere on the outside of the cab or hood.

YUP! Correct!! I have a pair of original NOS Explorer Badges (emblems) that were used on the bedsides of the 71/72 Explorers in my parts collection right now! I think they have the D1TZ part number. And they are not the same badges that are on my 75 Explorer.
Dan
p.s. if this topic really gets going, then I'll pull them and post a pic.
Well, as instigator of this discussion, I guess I stand corrected. I keep meaning to dig out my 71 brochure to check this out but haven't had time. Haven't bought a 72 brochure because the pics are so cheesy. Dan, that would be great if you could post a pic and the original part number.
There's no mention of the Explorer in either the '71 or '72 brochures. Cheesy pictures? Maybe, but the 4 page fold-out with the phantom view kinda makes up for it.
I was gonna post a pic of those badges but I can't find 'em, sheesh!

Well, it seems that I done went and opened my mouth again about posting pics. I got the pics with my digital camera, but I could not figure out how to post them here with my message. I'll be glad to email them to you, just drop me a message at danh@insightbb.com and I'll send them. Unless you can tell me how to post them here.
You won't find the Explorer model in the brochures. It wasn't a standard package like the Custom, Ranger & Ranger XLT. It was always a limited edition model clear up into the 70's and always had it's own handout printed just for it. Even my parts book dosen't list the part number for the Explorer emblems.
If any of you have a 2001 D.C. catalog, on page 62 is a post card of the "1968 Ford F100 Explorer Special", however these early ones didn't have the bed side emblems and most of them had a Glove Box emblem that said Explorer. I have one of these as well that I found NOS. I almost bought a `71 Explorer that had the emblems on the bed. But these NOS emblems I have has a `72 part number on them, but they may have just been updated. The part number on these is D2TZ-9925622-A.
Thanks for the info, Dan. I've got a couple of the Explorer dash emblems along with Camper Secial and Farm and Ranch Special nameplates as well but have never seen the bedside plates. As for the pics, Barry, I meant they could have done something better for the cover page. Nice dog but I'd rather see the truck.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Nov-02 AT 03:55 PM (EST)] I have a 71 explorer with the glovebox badge. My truck's bed emblems are missing. I ordered a book from motorhaven that covered the explorer some. It said that they were usually mid year offerings to boost sales say from 69-72. My truck has the western pattern seat and the nicer door panels but is manual steering. I have wondered if mine is a sport or sport custom and whether or not it came withthe mag style hubcaps. Mine also does'nt have the chrome around the brake lights or windshield.
