Battery drain

So i have been feeling out the 65 that i bought. I seem to have a parasitic battery drain. The guy before me put the 460 engine in and did all wiring so I'm slowly tracing everything down.
I think it's my alternator. I have done load tests, pulled all fuses with no results.
The meter shows around 3.5 amps being pulled from the battery. It isn't always constant, seems to surge someone's. But the max load reading I'm getting is 3.5a.
After pulling all fuses to no avail, i disconnected the alternator power wire from the relay, and my load dropped to around .5 amps instantly. The second i reconnect the alternator wire it goes back to around 3.5 amp load. I realize that there are a couple of other wires connected to that alternator wire that i disconnected, but they seem to go to the front lights, none of them should be my problem.
So, what do you guys think? Bad diode in the alternator?
One more thing, my electric choke is hooked to the alternator. If i disconnect the come, it does drop the load by .5 amps, is that normal for the code to draw current nonstop?
Thanks for any tips you guys can give!
