Rear Bumper Question

Hello Fellow Ford truck owners,

It has been a while since I last posted on this forum due to a busy work and school schedule. Anyway, summer is here and its time to get my 79 finished up and on the road again. I need to purchase a styleside rear bumper (not step) and have ran across two different kinds at the LMC website. The two bumpers sold are the 36 1/2 inch frame rail width and the other is the 40 frame rail width. To determine which one I need do I need to measure between both frame rails? When I measured this morning it appears that it was closer to 38 inches wide. After looking at bronco graveyard website, they offer a 341/2 and a 37 1/2 frame rail with bumper so I am totally confused. My truck came equipped with the step bumper but I am switching to the bronco style bumper. Any advise is appreciated! Thanks

1973/79 F100/350: There are only two rear frame rails widths (behind the cab): 33 1/2" & 37 1/2"

33 1/2" = 1973/77 F250 4WD (Highboys) / 1973/79 F350 Regular Cab's on the 140" wheelbase (Super Camper/Trailer Specials, '77/79 Camper Specials), and one other F350 with narrow frame rails.

Everything else: 37 1/2" rear frame rails.

1978/79 Bronco uses the same chrome rear bumper (D3TZ-17906-A) as 1973/79 F100/350 Stylesides w/37 1/2" rear frame rails, but the bumper brackets are Bronco only.

Note: Beside the bumper, you will also need the brackets. The type used with a step bumper are different.

Thanks Number Dummy! Nice to hear from you again, not sure why LMC has the bumpers listed differently. I guess the 40 inch on the LMC website is the 37 1/2 incher. Bronco grave yard is out of the chrome so I guess my only option is LMC right now. I am pretty sure that my truck has the wider measurement. Its a 79 2wd long bed f 150 Ranger. I am going to look around maybe I can find something a bit cheaper. Also, I believe I have the correct brackets. A fine gentleman here on the forums sold me a pair a while back!

All 1973/79 F100's & 1975/79 F150's have 37 1/2" rear frame rails.

AFAIK, all the repro parts sellers have the chrome rear bumper.

It's listed under the original Ford part number (D3TZ-17906-A) on page 73 in Carpenters '67/79 truck catalog for $200.00.

Perhaps whoever authored the specs in the LMC catalog used the outside frame dimension rather than the inside frame dimension?

Hio silver, you might be right! I just looked at it and it reads width of the mount holes

I'd bet that they are using the actual mounting holes in the bumper for their measurement. The mounts off set to the outside of the frame rail and would be wider where the bumper actually bolts to the mount than the width of the frame rail. I have that bumper on my 78 F150 4x4 so I could measure it for you if you'd like.

If the bumper bracket do not work, I will buy them BACK from you, how's that sound?
Or you can resell yourself, I know a few more folks on here that wanted them.

You just said yes first.....pm me if they do not work and we can go from there.

Hey 77,79, nice to hear from you! I am sure the bravkets will work. Just trying to figure out which bumper to order. Its not cheap to ship so I want to make sure I order the right one and avoid returns.

Roelito the bumper brackets came off a 77.5 F250 4x4 with a reg bed....

LMC Truck Parts - Page 16

49-9542 styleside
49-9544 styleside and bronco

The brackets for a bronco bumper look different, I know I have some of them too.

I would mount that brackets and take a measurement. Ask LMC where the measurements come from, inner or outer top side mount holes?

If I was near the bumper, which I am not, I'm in Lithuania, I would go measure it for you.

So I can order either bumper? Or do I order the styleside? I believe both bronco and f150 bumpers are the same except the brackets correct?
