Just did the wheel bearings on my bronco with a d44 solid front axle (5bolt) and there was the inner looser nut, then the washer that locks in place, and then the very tight outer nut, i would definately recomend getting the outer bearing and the washer since i just had my inner nut loosen off causing my wheel bearings to shred and force the outer nut off the spindle stripping the threads on the spindle resulting in needing a new spindle and new wheel bearings as well as new internals in my locking hubs, and all the happened with two nuts and the washer in

This thread was also posted in the Ford Truck section of the forum, and it was resolved there. The factory service manual shows some variations of the D44 with two nuts and some with one, depending on the vehicle. My truck is only supposed to have one, but most others have two.

i should have posted that reply here too.
the D-44 with manual locking hubs only has one nut. the D44 with automatic locking hubs, D-50 IFS, and D-60 mono-beam axle all have 2 nuts with the retainer
