I wasted a couple hours once checking every possible way for one that was boucing all over. Road tested with NGS monitoring VSS. VSS signal dancing everywhere. Replaced speed sensor. Still bounced, and VSS signal still fluctuating. Pulled the rear cover on the diff and checked all the teeth on the tone ring. Checked all the wiring back to front.
On the models prior to 97, the PSOM controls the signal to the speed control and speedometer and VSS monitor reading comes from PSOM.The only real way to test the VSS is with a multimeter it seems, if the cluster PSOM is bad. Replacing the cluster fixed it all up. That doesnt mean that you cant have something else screwed up, but the symtoms sure look like cluster to me.

On a '95, the PSOM is totally independent of the rest of the cluster, and it's easy to pop it out & mess with it. Also, the sensor in the rear axle is technically called the "ABS sensor"; not the "VSS", which is used on older & newer vehicles but not '92-96 trucks.

Your problem still has to be in the PSOM head because pressing the buttons affects it. You don't have to pull the diff cover to get to the sensor - it slips out the top. And you can shine a light into the hole and spin one rear wheel to check the tone ring. The teeth should all look the same, and they shouldn't move side-to-side as the diff turns. But I'm sure that's not the problem.
Thanks, Ill remember that if I ever get the opportunity to play with PSOM, but at the dealer level, we only have the cluster replacement option for warranty purposes. (unless the parts boys are lieing to us... that never happens does it?.. )

Ok OK, Ill admit it, I still am confused what the psom is. Is it the speedo that I look at when I drive, is it the whole cluster, or is it somthing that can be replaced with out messing up the odometer. That is the what I realy want to know. How can i get this fixed and still have the same odometer reading. Sorry for my ignorence. This stuff is all new to me. Ilike my 66 mustang, its simple!!
Hey guys I got a cluster from a salvage yard for $70 and the mileage was within 1000, lucky me huh. If you call several different salvage yards I bet you can find one close tp your own.
