So I'm lookin for advice I have a 2006 f350 with 4 inch lift and when I shift into reverse only reverse I'm hearing a slight clunk and quite a bit of play in my drive shaft I'm Woundering what could possibly be wrong? Thanks
Both suggestions above are good ones. Also check backlash by jacking it up off the ground in neutral and twist the drive shaft back and forth. Try to move the pinion flange up and down / in and out to check the bearings.
If it happens in reverse only I doubt you have rear trouble, I would check the trans mount as in reverse it would lift the back of the trans, and in drive it would push down, so you would not notice it in drive but in reverse you would I have heard of the splines sticking and with the lift you pulled the slip joint out an inch or so, but you would have it in both forward and back as well, I have 6 inch lift on mine and had to replace the trans mount for the same type of problem. That solved it, you cant check u-joint's with the drive shaft under load, chock the wheels remove the rear shaft flange and make sure they move freely, no binding, inspect them close look for rust powder and play at each joint. But a u-joint would do it in drive as well as reverse, start the truck, put it in reverse and power brake it. Have someone with some knowledge looking under while you do it. see what happens. Does the drive shaft spin or does the *** of the trans lift. keep us posted.
