Why when I go to most parts places on line thay only want you to Change the front shocks only.the last time I did a shock job I replaced all four shocks.
I was told if your going to just do one you should do all at one time.when buying the shocks why do most say front? Can I buy all four that say front and put two
On the rear ?
Most vehicles have different shocks/struts on the front and rear. So they have two different part #'s. So when the description says "front" they only fit the front of the vehicle. The rears are a different part #. You have to buy the rears separately.
It's a good idea to replace all 4 or 6 ( some 4x4's came with 4 shocks up front ) at the same time. But at the minimum you should replace both of the front or both of the rear shocks at one time. Never replace just one shock and not the shock on the other side.
Thanks I plan on doing this in June .is ther any how to step by step instructions on this site
It's been some time since I changed my 89 ford f100.pluse I had a shop to do it in .if I do it my self I will be doing it in my yard.if I can save money that's money I can put into the truck?
Is the vehicle you're talking about the '89 F100? (I'll move your question to the appropriate forum).
But shocks on these trucks are very easy to do yourself. The hardest part is simply getting the nut off and on the top of the front shocks since there's not a lot of room.

Good idea to replace all 4. Better gas shocks from the AP store work fine in a stock or near stock application. That said, I think the front (coil?) spring setup is more sensitive to shock condition vs rear leafs. I have run OK on a budget with new front shocks and old worn out rears.
Well I called Goodyear tire shop and thay set up a appointment for 9:00am in the morning
To replace all 4 shocks. What I hate is the place I bring all my vehical's to is went to hell .
I think ther under new manegment.the last few times I bought my mothers car ther thay tore up the car I bought in.broke the trunk release and gas cap releas in the door Handel
Thay pushed it into the door and now some one has to take the door apart to retreav it.
Well thay quoted me a price to replace all 4 shocks at $466.00 so just to see and I called other shops in the same field as thay wher.wow they Wher riping me off.good year will do it for $320.00 and with better shocks.dam why is every one seeing how thay can rip good peppole off or thay are all on crack.Dam
This isn't even an exaggeration - it's literally true. A 12-year-old should be able to do this no problem. It's just a bolt/nut at each end of each shock. You're looking at maybe $50 in parts...
My brother charges $84 an hour for labour, 2 hours labour would be $168. He gets 80, the shop gets 44 and his truck, sail boat and girlfriend get the other 44. He walks 25' to get to work. Change the shocks your self, it's easy and willgive you a bit of a workout and save you some money. Buy yourself a lube gun and grease your truck, it will give you a chance to see what your suspension and underside looks like.
