First off im sorry if there is a thread on this already i havent been able to find it. So ive got a 92 f150 with the 5.8 in it and have been dumping loads of money into it and have now began to question if i should do the swap i was gonna wait to do. The swap is i have a 302 punched out to a 349 sitting at home and was contemplating to swap a c6 in it at the same time seen as i really do not wanna keep the electronic trans thats in the truck (less computerization the better imho). I was wondering if the transfer case currently on the truck would work on a c6 or what other transmission it may work on. Im trying to do this for budget but at the same time do not wanna cut corners. Most likely the truck will become carburated with the engine swap unless i can find a donor truck or maybe a mustang setup for cheap because the older fuel injection i dont mind tinkering with and i know would be more efficient. Any information is greatly appreciated and i apologize if any or possibly all of this sounds stupid.
Hmmm. 349ci is pretty close to the 5.8l you already have. Dumping the E4OD in favour of a C6 will lose overdrive with no appreciable advantage in strength and dumping EFI in favour of carburation is also a step backward.
Not sold on doing either but not worried about over drive because i bought the truck to pull my car home and for winter, so for a work truck. Been looking for a donor vehicle like a bronco or another f150 that the engine is shot but the rest is good then id just pull the computer and everything from the donor vehicle and put it in my truck. As far as transmission i just need something that's gna be fairely stout because i need a minimum of a 2500 stall for the engine and quite frankly dont know anything about the transmission in the truck. If itd bolt to my engine id be fine with that but it also has 185000 miles on it and im pretty sure my engine would tare it apart with that many miles and being stock. My main thing is im pretty sure the upper half for the 5.8 in the truck wouldnt work on the engine i have so thats why for simplicity id carburate it.
A 349 stroker based on a 302 is really just a 3.4" stroke crankshaft and a 0.040" overbore. A 5.8l has the same 4.00" bore as a 302 and a 3.5" stroke. Advantage 5.8l/351W. All the top end parts save for the intake manifold interchange, so with everything equal, the 5.8l you already have will likely outperform the 349 stroker.
Losing overdrive is not a good choice for a work truck. The E4OD uses the same gearset as the C6, with the addition of an overdrive. Strength is comparable. Fuel economy will suffer terribly by losing the overdrive. The electronics that control the shifting are intimidating to some, but they are dependable and shift points are easily tuned with an aftermarket controller. I'll confess to having little love for the E4OD as I've blown up several of them where I have never burnt up a C6, but I have learned alot from people like our Mark Kovalsky and I'm much more comfortable with this transmission now. My current ride has over 300K km on the E4OD and it works just fine. 5.8l F250 will still pull down a house.
If you absolutely must install that 349, get a 5.0 intake manifold and run the electronics you already have. Easier and cheaper than going the underperforming and unreliable carburetor route.
I understand the difference in the 5.8 and my 349 just has a few more goodies in it than the 5.8 lol. Appreciate the info because from the sounds of it i just need to find the top end from a f150 or bronco with the 5.0 and everything that regulates the 5.8 should plug into the 5.0 components? And i have an E4OD in the truck? Just clarifiing for pricing out the stall converter ill need when i do the swap. I honestly really appreciate the info.
