So I want to put a Hyrdoboost onto my 86 F250 (6.9) and after reading through a bunch of threads I'm not really clear on which part the parts stores aren't carrying. Does anyone have a picture or what not of the rod that they say to reuse is? Reading the cardone installation instructions I didn't see any mention of a rod being reused, but I don't have the greatest of faith in that.
My hydroboost was a simple swap in F450 replacement from the auto part store. I just dropped it in, didn't worry about relocating the pin on the pedal or anything. Biggest issue was having new lines made, which im sure you could just get off the shelf replacements.
Yes lines are off the shelf as well as a hydro unit. Rockauto seems to have the best price on the unit that ive seen so far. Pumps are avalible but just the pump reservoir is not at least from dorman aftermarket supplier and thats who we use at advance auto as well as most other auto parts stores. Stores may list one and if it is from dorman it is a mistake because i confirmed with them that they do not make one. Couldnt one just put a tee and make a return on the standard reservoir?
You can just do a T on the return line, but I've read that it doesn't work for everyone. The return from the hydroboost should go straight through the T (the 'top'). The steering return would go on the 'bottom' of the T.
Reason being is that any back pressure on the return from the hydroboost can cause braking issues of some sort.
One of these days I need to pull the rod out of the hydroboost unit I have sitting in the garage and measure it. Its not that its anything really fancy, but if you don't get the length correct the brakes could drag all the time, or won't apply fully.
I know I've read about people just swapping the reservoirs. Maybe its a Ford only part, but they are available from somewhere.
So I got it installed this weekend. There were a couple of interesting items:
The hydroboost unit came with a note saying I needed to install the old pushrod pin and spring, but it already had one in it. I used the one in it.
The lines I had for the pump to the hydroboost matched up with the output on the old (ie. the spare I pulled at the junkyard with all the hydroboost stuff) pump, so used the old pump's output.
The reservoir went on without a hitch on the new reservoir.
The superduty pedal went right onto my truck, but it doesn't have the vacuum dump piece on it. Until I figure something out I won't have cruise control.
So basically, not to hard of an install overall, and the results are amazing. I expected it to be easier to push the pedal down, and while it is easier to push the pedal down, you don't need to. Instead, the brake power modulation is much more about pressure instead of travel. I had a bit of a panic stop on my test drive (light turning yellow) and let me tell you, the stuff I had in the bed of the truck FLEW!
