Does anyone know if the metal lines that run across the top of the rack and pinion unit can be replaced. I called the dealer and NAPA and they have no listings. Both told me to buy a new rack and I will get the lines I need. Mine have apparently rubbed together or rusted. Fluid is leaking out of one of them right where they run together. Are the fittings common thread that I could go to the parts store and get two sections of line with the appropriate size fittings and bend my own. The truck is a '95 Explorer 4x4 with the 4.0 engine. Advise on this repair appreciated. Thanks.
Some of this kind of stuff Ford is making money off of, some of the small stuff they want you to buy a whole thing of something whether you need the extra thing or not just like a shifter linkage they won't just sell that as one piece you gotta buy it along with something else ya don't need. Not to sure bout threads and all that, you could always try a junkyard, I don't think I'd go for that type of part but ya could get lucky and find good lines.
The truck is one that I plan to resell shortly so I don't want to put a lot of $$ into. If I can't find the lines, I will try to make some. I just hope they are a standard flare end.
A few years ago I replaced the rack/pin on my 96 Explorer...so I know what lines you are referring to. I reckon that you could prefab your own lines with the proper size using a line bending tool that are priced pretty reasonable. Just a thought...
