I have a 2000 Superduty and live in colorado went traveling downhill and I put the tranmission into 2nd gear from drive to help the truck slow down and the engine just free wheels at idle about 800 rpm there is no engine braking , has anyone had this problem an whats the fix
I'm not sure if the torque convertor locks in second gear or not, but if it doesn't, that could explain it. Diesels are lousy at compression braking, unless you have an exhaust brake. On my truck, my torque convertor locks in 3rd at 36mph. Once I've reached that speed, and felt the torque convertor lock, I feel quite a bit of compression braking.
That's called the "Coast Clutch", it's a gimmick to help raise the fuel mileage but does nothing to help hold you back while descending a hill.
I have a switch wired in where I can lock up the torque converter whenever I want. Last week, I pulled about 13,000 pounds westbound through the Eisenhower tunnel and with the torque converter locked up, I was in second gear at around 40 mph and used no brakes.
Do search here on for "how to" directions for the switch, or you can just barely press on the throttle to engage the lockup.
