Check Eng light
Couple of issues....
1) Had a tune up recently ( plugs. cap, rotor, oil change). Prior to this, once in a while the check engine light would come on momentarily. Now it comes on and stays on. Owners manual said fuel restriction or enhaust restriction. Fuel filter had not been changed in a long time, so I had a new fuel filter put on. Slows down how fast the light comes on, but it still comes on and stays on. Must be exhaust related???
2) Crankcase breather filter, where it goes into the air filter box is missing the clamp and, I think, a small elbow. Not sure. I know the breather filter itself comes as a one piece unit. I know the clamp is discontinued and it seems I can fid on ebay. Do I also need the elbow I see in some diagrams? Or does the one piece filter fit into the brankcase breather hose?
Could this issue with the crankcase breather be the issue that is turing on the check engine light?
Oops! One more issue......
Temp guage fluctuates a lot, especially in cold weather. Had temp sensor replaced and it calmed down some, but still fluctuates ( from the N to the L on the guage face).
The engine literally purrs after the tune up. 352K on it. I appreciate any input on the above issues. Thanks!!!!
Check engine light still comes on after driving for awhile. Doing further research, maybe an O2 sensor?? Catalytic converter?? ideas???
Regarding the crankcase breather. I was missing the clip ( discontinued by Ford) but found one on ebay. It also appeared to need an elbow, so I also found what seemed to be the correct part, but it is not or I am missing something. Does anyone have a diagram/parts breakdown for a '97 7.5L engine at the air filter. I need specifically where the crankcase breather hose connects to the air filter box. The air filter box I have has two large hoses coming out the upper left ( standing in front of the vehicle looking at the engine). The crankcase breather filter connects at the rear ( toward the driver) down low.
Thanks! Laura
Maybe someone else can weigh in if i am incorrect
and ps. without you being able to pull the codes, no one will be able to help you with the check engine light.
your truck should be obd1, so a scan is not needed. you can pull the codes like this http://web.archive.org/web/201104140...tion.com/?p=13 Rla2005 showed me this link and it worked like a charm for pulling codes.
Crankcase filter....Somebody had rigged a piece of hose before, but it had rotted. We were just trying to connect it correctly, but it seems FORD doesn't believe in its own vehicles and has discontinued the part ( elbow). Guess we'll be jury-rigging a hose too.
If you are still unable to retrieve codes it could be a bad computer.
At this point throwing parts and speculating are only going to lighten your wallet.
