A/C compressor replacement

My dealership tells me that the compressor is shot. They want $1,100+ for a reman unit. Does anyone have a recommendation for a better alternative? I searched and saw some negative comments about Murray brand. Any other thoughts or brands?

Are you sure it is shot and not just engaging properly? What is it doing, or not doing?

I just performed the steps in the video last weekend and it fixed my seemingly failing compressor. I did not have to remove any shims, just cleaned everything really well with brake cleaner and tightened it back down.

If the compressor is shot chances are it filled the condensed and accumulator/dryer with trash. $1100 sounds about right for replacing everything, if they are just doing the compressor that's a bit steep. I bought all my stuff from Ed (parts guy Ed from back in the day) and IIRC the compressor was only about $200.

It does nothing. Dealership told me it was leaking. I talked with the guy at ackits.com at length. I just don't know if I can get it flushed sufficiently to do the job myself, especially knowing it has rear air. I may get a second opinion from an indy shop.
