ok well my a/c compressor went out today the clutches started to burn i could smell it, im guessing thats why it started blowing hot air right?? so i need to buy another one where do i find one maybe a used one at a salvage yard or something well thanks for the help trevor
If it started blowin hot air, and you kept runnin it, then yeah, u probably killed the compressor. I bought one at the junk yard, and had to buy a replacement clutch and electromagnet assembly for it from the parts house. Got it on, and had it working GREAT in one afternoon.
My unit had a broken nose piece that the clutch sits on. The A/C still held a charge. In your case, you will have to look at the lines after you remove the old compressor. See if there is any junk or rust or metal bits in the pressure line. Hopefully, thats all that is wrong...
IF your clutch had died, and nothing else happened, does your compressor shaft still turn fairly easily? The clutch itself costs around $100...
ok well i checked out my air compressor and i took off both lines and found no rust or metal bits. and i dont know if this matters but when i turn the compressor by hand and hold the holes that the comes off the compressor it has air coming out of them and is their really any easy way to take the compressor apart i took off the bolt in the center of the compressor and it looks like the clutches would just fall out and the clutches look really rusted on the out side of them from what i can see thanks for the help trevor
Did you get alot of rushing air sounds when you disconnected the lines at the compressor? If so, you lost your charge of refrigerant. The clutch will come off if you give it somewhat of a nudge. Mine came right off. You cant take your compressor apart.
no i did not it already leaked out due to the high side red cap was striped and i figured let it leak out i convered it to r134 two years ago so pretty cheap to fill again oh ok i will try that tom and i found a air compressor from lmc for $169 i might do that less work and the clutches for my compressor are 100 bucks what do you guys think thanks for all the help trevor
When you go to recharge it, you will need to pull a good vacuum with a vacuum pump to get all the moisture and air out of the system. I ALWAYS let my vacuums sit for an hour or so, then try to pull some more air out. I've never had an issue after doing a charge this way. My truck has good COLD air conditioning.
oh ok where i get a vacuum pump i have not missed with a/c that much kinda lost and the lines will be off till i can afford a new a/c compressor so should i cover the lines up with something do they made some sort of plastic cover dont want to get dirt in the lines thanks for the help trevor
Cover the line ends with duct tape. Check with an A/C shop and see what they might charge to vac your system. You dont want to know how much a vac pump costs... Around $600 for a Robinaire brand unit. I have one, but I bought it when I was doing HVAC system work. (Worked for a heating / cooling business)
