I found out yesterday i have a vacumn problem of some sort. So i found this https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...ped-workn.html thread earlier and read it and instantly went out to the truck and got up under it and moved the tires side to side to inspect the line. I was surprised to find the line on the drivers side front wheel was disconnected from the nipple at the top. So i reconnected the line and went and hopped up in the truck and started it up. I flipped it into 4x4 and it instantly engaged, the air was coming out of the right vents and stuff it all seemed good. Well i flipped it in and out multiple times messed with the air putting it on different settings and it went back to defrost when it was on a/c. So this leads me to conclude there is still a leak but im not sure where. I found the line just dangling there so is it something that will automatically correct itself since i reconnected the line, does it take time for the vacumn to rebuild or something, or is there another leak?
The lines are dry rotted kind of bad they are still intact but when i would fumble with the hoses they would flake some. Does it take a big hole to cause this problem or a small one to the point you can barely see it?
Thanks
Leak? Maybe, maybe not... Your flipping things back and forth might be giving you a bad indication. The vac system is pretty weak and there are actuation times on things like the hub solenoid. You might have just degraded the vacuum and the system got "stuck in the middle." Try it again, but wait a minute between operations. I think the hubs vac cycle is 40 seconds..?
A small hole will probably do you in. You might try some grease on the fittings to improve the seal.
Makes since. When it went back to the defrost setting i hopped out and went to check all the lines one more time while it was running and when i got back in it was back to normal.
I plan on getting new lines tonight or tomorrow and putting them on. Is there anything special about the lines or are they something i can just pick up at autozone?
And where exactly is the vac located? I would like to just inspect it and the lines running into it but im not sure in the engine compartment its located.
The pump is located in the engine bay on the passenger fender well. Turn the key on and cycle the vents a couple times with the engine off. That should make the pump start up. Not sure about the specific material for the lines. Standard black rubber tubing seems like it ought to work.
