I was getting ready to order some Cran Cams Roller Rockers for my 351m.. I was worndering if I need anything else to install them, like special kind of guids or do they bolt right in where the stock rockers come off... Also will they fit under a stock valve cover??
It depends, I am not familiar with Crane products, but I know that there are two types of roller rockers out there. There are ones that are total stock replace and will bolt on - these are the pedastal mount type rockers and in my opinion are much better than the alternative.
The alternative I have seen several times, and it is that you replace the pedastal mount rockers with screw-in studs, and have stud mounted rocker arms.
Im sure that they could. I would go with pedastal mount if you want a direct bolt on replacement. At high RPMs, pedastal mounted rockers continue to go only their pivot point - up and down.
Stud mounted rockers at high RPMs have no set pivot point, they can go up down, and sway side to side. Not very good for a stable valve train.
Cheby boys pay big money to put in stable valve trains, Ford has them to begin with on many engines, FE. 460, 400, etc. Use the pedestal mounts only, -unless you LIKE cheby wobble rockers, hardened pushrods scraping away at the inside of your engine, guideplates, flexy studs... Yuck! Don't let them Cheby boys take you over to the dark side!
i dont know about you guys but id rather have a chevy style valve train for the high rpm capability and stability. a 5/16 bolt will flex a whole heck of a lot more than a hardened 7/16 stud. so what if it costs a bit more to get the components, better safe than sorry.and btw almost any ford engine pre 1973(excl. FE, and non performance cleveland based engine) had a so-called "chevy style valve train". im talking windsor , any 385 series engine, and all performance varients of the cleveland. sorry to burst anyones bubble.
If you want complete, pedestal-mounted roller rockers for a 335-series (351C/351M/400) engine, the only ones available are the Ford Racing part #M-6564-C351. I heard that Crane makes them for Ford.
The only other pedestal-mount options are the Crane roller fulcrum conversion kit (#36806-16), which requires OEM sled-fulcrum-compatible rocker arms, and the Crane guideplate conversion kit (#52655-16), which allows you to use any 7/16" stud-mounted rockers.
If I was going to run stud-mounted rockers, I wouldn't use the conversion kit. I would have the heads machined for the full-length 7/16 mounting studs.
Are a good deal. About $260 at Summit. Mine work very nicely. I run a .519"/.519" lift cam and have had no problems. If you go this way, don't forget their shim kit. Big thing here is they are BOLT ONS!

Steve. Do you run a 351c or a 351m?..Thats what I want is direct bolt ons..I have a .510"/.536"lift cam thats going in..
I may give them a call instead, I really dont want to use a stud mount type, I want the pedsetal type..

Also Bubba, where do I find the Ford Racing brand at?
Scorpion makes a pedestal mount setup just like the Ford Motorsport units.
The 5/16 bolt just holds the rocker down, the pedestal keeps it from flexing and flexes much less than the 7/16 stud. Plus the pushrod and guideplate geometry is always trying to work at the stud.
The older 300-6 and 302-351W engines do use the cheby style wobble rockers and I never liked them either.
Like I said above:
"Ford has them to begin with on many engines, FE. 460, 400, etc."
I made no mention that the 302-351W family had stable valve trains, and did not include them in my example. I did not say ALL Fords have stable valve trains.
Cheby boys DO PAY BIG $$$ to try to get "stable" valve trains. Look in any of the performance catalogs at the stud girdles and shaft conversion kits... I have to laugh at it all.
I would not use the Crane "conversion kit" either.
Nice to know about the Scorpion rockers, but I'm not familiar with their quality and history. The Scorpion prices I'm finding on the web are about the same as the Ford Racing parts, and for about the same money, I like the Ford Racing brand better.
-Custom,
Ford Racing Performance Parts is the current name for what used to be called Ford Motorsports/SVO. You can get them from all the major catalog outfits (Summit, Jegs, etc.), and at almost any Ford dealer.

It comes down to, short of the actual Ford Motorsport rockers, the Scorpion pedastal mount are probably the best pedastal mount roller rockers out there (because there are oh so many of them to choose from:P)
Fingering through my parts catalogs Im seeing seeing Crane energizer has pedastal mount rockers as well. They are all vaccum cast aluminum to my knowledge, correct me if thats incorrect.
