anybody here have/had headers on their 460 carbed or 7.5 EFI Van
I think I will be putting a bigblock into my 86 E150 shorty. picked up a bigblock cubevan for scrap and has all the conversion pieces I need other than a good engine. its locked up from sitting.
have seen a few different headers available for 75-91 Eseries 460, but no feedback on any of them. Sanderson and
hopefully somebody here has some experience, I am obviously building a toy, and headers with sidepipes where runningboards would go is definitely on the table. I have an old 429 Thunderjet I may use(needs freshening) , and also have the option of a 79 460 truck motor........................
luckily my 86 is equipped with the 9" rear so it will take some abuse
I've read positive things over the years on the Doug Thorley tri-Y's. I was looking at header options this morning for my motorhome and was reminded of those. They came up on google shop, for somewhere around $400.
I bought some years ago and they did not fit.....You are better off going with the stock manifolds and dual 2.5 " exhausts....UNLESS you are a master welder and can make your own...
I have recently ordered a set of Doug Thorley headers, I am hoping they will fit!
Spoke to Banks Engineering a few months ago, they told me they stopped make the Econoline/7.5 headers many years ago, and have scrapped the jigs. Quite hard to find headers for these vans, I think I found a listing on Hedman Headers website for these vans as well.
I think I'm going to try the EFI manifolds on the 79 460 I have in an E250.
89 manifolds look a little bigger outside dimension. might have better flow?
saw a listing on Stan's headers for the Eseries 460, they have headers for just about everything , even the idi diesel 6.9 and 7.3! had straight 2.5" pipes on a 89 F250 diesel back a while, it was loud and awesome. wonder what it would have sound like with headers. .
I think I'll go for cam/chain&gears/oil pump instead of headers, around the same money....................
I added a set of Hedman Elite headers for my 82 E350 based 460 motorhome. Fit well, good solution for cracked stock exhaust manifold and the ceramic coating has drastically reduced doghouse and underhood temperatures. Biggest problem was getting the stock manifolds off. Highly reccommend them!
I purchased the Hedman Elite Ford 460 version recommended for Motorhome applications because the pipe gauge was stronger (14 gauge vs, 18), the exhaust flanges were thicker (3/8 in vs 1/4) and the Elites were HTC ceramic coated vs. the painted less expensive version. I suspect both are done with the same jigs, so fitment would be pretty much the same. With the headers, the engine is quite responsive and with carb tuning shows better MPG, but THE biggest difference is the huge difference in undressed and doghouse temperatures!
