If your pump is good, the growling is caused by air in the system. You have to "bleed" the system by turning back and forth the steering wheel until the noise goes away. Add fluid to keep it full. If not, the pump is bad. I have a 89 F-250 and I've had the growl in mine for 6 years. As far as the pulling, I would make sure the s/box isn't adjusted too tight. That causes the steering to pull to one side.
Bleed the system first! Raise the front of the truck, start the engine and turn the steering wheel all the way left, then right several times. Add fluid and repeat until the steering turns smoothly without any noise from the pump. Pulling may be caused by low tire pressure, steering alignment or hanging brake caliper. Check all this out ASAP! Adjusting mesh load on the gear box is not difficult but requires an inch pound torque wrench and disconnecting the pitman arm at the gear box. Try the other stuff first and post back. The tech section has an article on this mesh load business.
i don't think there is air in the pump, i have turned it alot and the fluid hasn't gone down and the growling continues
i adjusted the gearbox and it helped a little, but the wheel is easier to turn to the right than the left
and with the truck jacked up, the wheel will turn to the right then i rev the engine, is the gearbox worn out too? maybe someone made all right turns in the donor truck
Man I hate it when this happens! Have you been driving this truck? I ask because sometimes Junk Yard boxes have been sitting a while and the hydraulic valves in them are screwed up (sticky) and driving may loosen them. There is a process to center the steering control valve but I haven't done this in years and I'll need to look in the book. If the pitman arm is disconnected can you move the wheels by hand lock to lock (aganst the steering stops)? The noise is I suspect is the pressure relief valve in the pump. Sometimes a complete fluid change helps to clean and flush out crap. You need to figure this out before you drive the truck. I'll look in the book when I get home this evening.
but he donor truck had sat up for atleat 10 years, as the motor was blown up in it.. the wheels move freely from right to left
i haven't tried purging the fluid, but i did run about 2 quarts through it before i ever started the engine
another thing, i am using the power steering fluid like you get at autozone, should i try some ATF?
10 years is a long time. I'm guessing the valves in the gear are stuck. Flushing with ATF might help, but the fluid from auto zone is allright. I usually core these gears to avoid the situation you are in. They cost about 150 bucks but that thing is so heavy I try to install it once and never screw with it again. I usually over do this stuff but I think its worth the extra money. I core everything on disc/power steering conversions. Wish I could be more helpful. I'll check the book tonight.
I checked my Chiltons for 71-78 Fords. Honestly, overhauling the steering gear is complicated and special tools are required. I recommend you replace the gear. The Junk Yard may let you swap it for a good one. Try to find one that has not been sitting. Wish I had better news!
