Hard steering to right. Please help

I have read through hundreds of searched posts here but still haven't found an answer. Seems a lot of guys don't update with what they did to solve the problem, so I'm looking for some help:

My son has our 92 F250 4x4 351W. One day it suddenly became very hard to turn to the right. Turns very easy to the left. I crawled under it while he cranked back and forth and everything moves fine with no binding, so I'm thinking PS pump or steering gearbox.

When I laid my hand on the gearbox it was extremely hot after driving around town.

I've read posts where some say it's seals in the gearbox, a plug in either the pump or gearbox or a faulty pump, but none of these were followed up on with results.

We have VERY LITTLE money to throw at this problem so are trying to research as much as possible before going at it. So far, we can get a gearbox from the wreckers for $50. Any suggestions?

If you are confident that nothing is binding in the steering/suspension then you have a bad steering gearbox. A bad pump would cause hard steering in both directions.

OK, thanks guys. That was my thought, but there were some confusing posts on the boards. I will be certain to update this with results when we attempt to repair.

It can get very confusing for sure, but after awhile you begin to learn who knows and who thinks they know

Let us know how it goes for sure, good luck!

My former 93 had the same problem. To be sure it's the steering box, jack the truck up, disconnect the tie rod end from the knuckle, and move it by hand to see if there's any resistance. Do this on both sides. If all seems fine there, then go ahead and replace the steering box.

You can also jack up each side front and lock in the lockout and spin the wheel by hand to check for binding. This will rule out the u joint if its good,it will spin normal. If bad it will bind up. These u joints cant be siezed up or you will have trouble steering.

UPDATED

Wanted to update for any future searches of this problem:

It was indeed the steering box. We picked one up from the wreckers today and swapped it in. Problem solved. It actually steers easier than it ever has. Can't even tell it's got 35's on it.

Butter smooth steering now. Thanks for the help guys. Glad to have it back on the street.

Totally wrong as in you spelled totally wrong, wrong. Also you revived a thread from 2011 to call out a statement of fact that is indeed not the complete story, but it is most often how that would show itself. Rather than point out how a pressure hose, rack(no idea personally how it works in a gearbox like the trucks have) and gummed up hydraulic components can indeed be one side only issue. My car had a gummed up rack, left was difficult. Strut mount was bad abs ball joint was binding. Right was okay becasue strut mount was okay, it unloads the left a tad so they move too, and the ball joint was okay.

Moral of the story is don’t ****ing revive dead threads or you end up getting word puke from me I mean it’s unproductive and unlikely to get relevant responses from those involved.

it is not an event that was precursed then transpired. It’s a state of being of which he understood, possibly before hardly anyone did.

it’s a constant, like thermodynamics, or tire side wall bulges in my vehicles because this is like the 5th tire in two years without fail.
