Just skipped time on my chain, when i pulled the timing cover noticed in with the front main seal is 2 bud light cans fromed together and wrapped around my crank. It is so wore out only half of it is left. I want to know what the purpose of that. i.s, before reassembling. Never had any leaks from there.
I'd say it's a redneck way to fix a area of a warn-out sealing area that's so deep a new seal won't stop the leaking pass the crankshaft or snout area..
I have seen guys do this type of fix it on 60 dana rear axle hub sealing areas also..
I can see that now. Couple guys sitting around polishing off a case trying to figure a fix till one came up with that idea. I have to confess I've used them to patch an exhaust pipe in a pinch.
