Is it possible to take out a blown up diesel and install a gas engine in a 2004 F350 Lariat and does the computer have to be changed or just a chip? Can the same trans and belhousing from the diesel be used to bolt to a 5.4?
Changing to a gas motor will result in a number of mods to wiring, engine computer, different trans, gauges, PATS system perhaps, fuel, exhaust, mounts and a host of other items.
Does your state have emissions testing? If so, it probably has to all match OEM and pass visual as well as pipe tests.
Have you had your engine declared dead? If not, what is wrong with it?
The engine, according to the owner, threw a rod and is definitely dead. I was thinking of buying the truck and changing the engine to a gas as the diesel is so expensive, but it looks like a conversion would be at least as much, unless I found a wrecked gas 350. Thank you for your help.
You need to change the wiring harness and the computer. You'll need to change the torque converter, but the transmission will work. Some of the shifts will be quite firm because the diesel trans is built to take more torque than the 5.4L will have.
