Is it a good idea to take out the gass motor of a 350 and put in a diesel motor? Trucks and cars are a hobby but I have never tried swapping the engine.
I have never done this myself but I do believe it would be a lot of work. You would have to change the computer, wiring, also have to change out the springs and make sure you are set up for the extra weight. I know I am missing a ton, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Unless you have parts for free, don't count your own labor and are good welder -you will never find it economical.
I bought 1980's motorhome that was converted to diesel. The guy who did it - put pretty old Toro Flow diesel on it, but had to redo all the piping, add auxiliary transmission to get the thing going above 50 mph and upgrade front wheels to handle the weight. I bought the motorhome for $4000 about 14 years ago.
That was before engines were married to the computers under the dash and transmissions....
I am getting off topic here but if i had to buy a 2007 truck what should I buy?
2007 F-350 or a 2007 Dodge 3500 Cummins?
I need a truck that can pull my boat out of water without any boat launch because I fish in areas that are really wild. Also I need to have good fuel economy.
I will consider putting in a cummins. you see on a car auction gas trucks go way cheaper than diesel. I was thinking I could save on that but apperently not. These days electricity is taking over. Something breaks you cant fix it. you have to go to a dealer. Back in the old days, if my old mans truck broke, he would get in there and fix it.
ok part of me wants to say you should probably start another thread but more of me wants to tell you that by 07 the 6.0 had the bugs worked out and is a solid motor, while the cummins is a great motor the 6.0 makes more than enough power and is reliable and the Ford is a much better truck

the reason i mention a cummins is depending on what you choose it can be easier. the 12v cummins have very little electronics and are capible of decent power, the 24v and cr cummins will make good power and seem to yeild more mpgs. the 7.3 is a great motor but lacks power and has alot of electronics. the 6.0 has good power but needs a few items to be a reliable motor. the parts for either are expensive and wiring can be intense. from what i have seen others post the wiring harnesses between gas and diesel are different specifically for ford meaning that you would need a complete harness or to merge a harness.

Thanks for the replies.
4x4 and low range. the motor means absolutely nothing if you dont have traction. when i drop the boat off at the ramp i could spin the tires like crazy or just put it in 4wheel and drive out normally. i also tent to try to keep the front end on dry pavement. unless you have a huge boat the biggest baddest diesel isnt nessisary just 4x4... now for looks the diesel is better hands down
12v cummins is what i would go with. With a little modification it makes ton of power, it's simpler, and easy to build. the fordcummins.com site sells good conversion kits from what I've heard.
If you're buying an 07 i would just get a 6.0 350 and not swap in the cummins. The 07 will do what you need no reason to stick the cummins in it unless you just want to have a ford with a cummins diesel. (only thing is if you're going to get more power out of the 6.0 put in better head studs)
