I have a 2001 PSD, EGT, tranny, and boost gauges, AFE air intake, SCMT in 80 hp mode. I pull a 29 ft travel trailer, that may weigh 7k loaded (not a big trailer I know). I am now looking to replace the exhaust system (the supposedly "open" muffler I installed didn't seem to help). My goal is to reduce EGT, gain power, and increase mileage.
I've seen several 4" exhaust systems out there, and have heard talk of a 5" exhaust. Can anyone recommend an exhaust that will accomplish my goals without breaking the bank?
What are the EGT's you see now? whats your milage? 2001 I believe has a 4" stock. Your down pipe is what needs to be replaced to open up the flow as well as losing the cat.
Well "right now" they're way too high and the truck is at the dealer. I think I have a mass air sensor bad or something.
Typically in 80 hp mode I run around 900 on the level at 70 mph. Up hill it will go to 1200+ if I don't watch it.
In the winter I get about 14 mpg empty. In the summer I get 16 empty, and 10-11 pulling a 29 ft 7k pound travel trailer at 70 mph with the cruise set. I've never been happy with the mileage, but Ford says everything checks out ok. I don't have a cat....truck came from Canada

I used the 4" aluminized exhaust from DPPI. It seems to work really well, but i didnt see my EGTs drop until i bought the NEW and IMPROVED SCMT Tri power. I really love the power the new SCMT has at all 3 HP levels. I dont think you will have problem selling the old SCMT, i sold mine in less than a week. But i would try the SCMT Tri Power Programmer, it worked for me.

Is that with the TT hooked up? It's not really all that bad if it is. If those are your temps unloaded then I think your problem is somewhere other than the exhaust. Like the butterfly in your exhaust backpressure valve is stuck partially shut.
Your EGT on flat ground loaded is the same as mine empty +- 100*. I never have towed a TT so I can't compare there, cuz frontal are is huge on TT. I allways tow flat trailers with cars (8k#)or heavy equipt(12-15k#). What are your RPM's going up hill? What gear are you in going up hill? What EGT do you consider "redline"? Are you measuring EGT pre or post turbo? On long uphils or steep ones I am obviously not in OD, and I keep my RPM's above 2500 more like 27-2800 even if I must down shift into 2nd, and I let my MPH be as it may going up hill. With those RPM's you are moving a lot of air through the engine and the temps are very manageable. Maybe your SCMT is the culprit, I don't have any experience with them. I only run chips and I have had problems with some brands raising my EGT'S too high. Have you tried a lower H/P setting to see if you get any EGT relief?
My RPMs, with cruise set at 70, are around 2250, maybe a bit more. Most of my driving is on the highway, so I set the cruise at 70 and leave it in OD. Normally it does not shift down. My EGTs are post turbo....uh, I think.. . Seems like that's how I installed it. I will get a lower EGT with the 60 hp mode, but then I'm losing power as well. Normally I will not redline, but occasionally on long steady inclines the temp will get up to 1200+.
I assume you have a automatic trans. Since you have a 4" exhaust already no sense in putting another 4" system on. Just change the Down Pipe. When you are towing uphill with your TT and having the temp problems you said earlier, are you still in OD with the cruise set at 70?
What were your RPM's when towing the TT up these hills?
Are your trans temps getting over 200 towing uphill?
Check to be shure where your EGT probe is located, cuz it makes a HUGE difference when under load. I personally have seen 600 deg. dif between pre & post turbo under load.
I am not knocking ISSPro gauges, but I have seen several times in the past that they needed to be calibrated, even new ones.
Where is your temp probe converter box mounted? In the cab, or in the engine comp.?
No, you will still need the Exhaust. And no i dont have any complaints at all with the new SCMT. U can tell there is a difference between the old 80hp and the new 110hp. As for the exhaust again. It is a very easy install. Took me about 2-3 hours. Make sure you have a sawzall to cut the old one out!!! will make it much easier. You will more than likely have to drop your Transmission mount crossmember to install the exhaust, so make sure u have something under there to hold the back of your tranny. If you have anymore questions, feel free in giving me a hollar. i check this forum ALOT.
I think u really should look ino doing a Pre-turbo EGT. Your temps pre turbo will be close to 200 degrees higher and give u a more accurate reading. Those are the temps that are actually going into your turbo and you dont want extended periods of over 1250 or more. Just a suggestion tho. but if u blow the Turbo, u can always buy the new ATS ball bearing turbo, i havent heard anything bad about it yet. Seems to give good power increases!!!!
I hate to seem like an idiot, I'm not a mechanic, but I did install the gauges myself. I think I may have my EGT pre-turbo, since as I recall that is what most people recommended. And I do remember the magical "1250" number you mentioned. All I remember is installing the darn thing on the cross pipe under and behind the engine.
What was the cost on your exhaust? Did you see any improvement in horsepower or fuel mileage when you installed it? How about mileage changes when going to the new SCMT tri-mode tuner?
