Joe, I'll be replacing my non-synchro T-9 with a 4R70W from Monster trans. I could have gotten it cheaper from a local junk yard but it is a crap shoot as to what you get. And it has been a long time since I went through an automatic trans. I'd probably leave out a key part and have to disassemble it all over again. Monster goes through them and upgrades some key areas. I got the HD version with a standard shift valve body. It should be here in a few weeks.
There are some adapters for various GM trans to mate with a Ford Flathead V8 but I think that is heresy.

What are you going to use as a controller (computer)?

Harley I know you didn't ask me but I figured I'd give my input. I'm using the US shift controller. Baumann is a nice guy and is really helpful if you have any problems. Controller is easy to setup and work flawlessly and the price is right
I don't think the 4R70W uses a throttle cable? if that's where you're heading
Well I looked at Baumann's site and the only carbs that they showed working with the Quick shift 4 was either an Edelbrock or Holley 4bbl with electric choke that they have a TPS designed to fit.
With that said, by the time you buy the controller and related hardware that's another $800

I made my own harness since it's only 9 or 10 wires and my throttle position sensor was 20 bucks. I'm in $445
I have been trying to decide what to do with my F1 and discussions like this are so valuable! I like to do things myself and my wife prefers I keep things as reasonable as possible. The truck came with a C6 behind a 351W. I am putting my dads flathead Merc engine that came out of his '49 F1. I would like to use the C6 but was worried about power loss. I have a 9" Ford rear diff that has a 3:1 gearing. Might need to change out the gear?
Trying to sort out a game plan...I just don't think the costs of the trans like Pete's can be overcome-but I love the idea of an OD trans!
You won't usually hear me trying to talk someone out of a flat V8, but the combination you have (if it's in good shape and working) is very practical. You'd spend thousands to go back to a flathead with 1/3 the power and an automatic. I doubt you'd get better mileage. A flathead would struggle to pull a 3.00 net ratio, with the C6, and if you added an OD trans you'd have a ratio that only worked going downhill.
