It is the CPS (camshaft position sensor). Get one from Ford or IH only. The parts store ones are junk. It's about a 10 minute job to change it.

would a code show up on the cam sensor or throttle body sensor because we ran the diagnostics and there's no codes..

There is no throttle body; it's a diesel. The CPS usually doesn't throw a code because in the "logic" of the PCM, there's no difference between an inop CPS and the engine physically stopping. There are some ways that the CPS can malfunction and throw a code, but when it just completely fails, no, typically there's no code.

I didn't mean throttle body I meant throttle positioning sensor on top of the engine

There is no throttle position sensor on top the engine. And what ever shop it was you took it to and they charged you $1000, I would never go back there again. You can more than likely fix this problem for about $40 and 10 minutes time.

Cps failure will cause a no tach readout on dash. It should be turning about 200 to 250 rpm on cranking. My best guess is the fuel heater check the #22? Fuse under the hood.

Blown PCM fuse would not allow the engine to start again after a few minutes. It may also be a different fuse number on the vans.

I thought truck was a no start. But still Worth inspecting the fuel heater. My fuel heater would touch the side of the canister and shut down. finally it cooked the harness and idm. But a faulty fuse allowed it to do this and never blew.

I will be out at my other property in a bit and will shoot a pic of the inside of the parts trucks fuel bowl. I might be pulling it out to do a reseal and rebuild. For my DD.

A bad TPS won't kill the engine.
3 common problems for a die then restart.
1. Bad CPS
2. Loose chip if you have one
3. Chaffed CPS wiring

After it quits, check HPOP oil level.

You either have an Oil issue or a CPS issue.

It will "usually" blow the fuse, but not always.

That is great advice.

He can unplug it from the side as well if its giving him trouble.

I would just hate to see it go until it burns up the idm like mine did not to mention the harness was an intermittent short that would send power to different places confusing the ecm causing the mechanic to chase his tail for over 2 months. Luckily for me it was a good buddy of mine or the repair bill would have been astronomical. Then I was at his shop and said screw it if it's going to be down I am going to do a fuel bowl reseal and change the fuel heater as well as the fpr spring. Pulled the fuel bowl and started cleaning it up and noticed a chared spot on the wire harness. Cut/replaced the wires and replaced the fuse and truck would fire up but idm would short out internaly and shut off changed that been running ever since no intermittent dieing/stall.
