95 7.3 powerstroke TPS

I've got a 95 powerstroke with 98000 on it. I like to do my own work on it when I can but recently a new problem is occuring where my truck will be idling fine, sound good and suddenly die. It will start right back up usually. It will also try to die while driving down the high way but fire right back up since the truck is rolling along. I'm assuming its the throttle position sensor and if I'm right, where the heck is it. I get lost following all those wiring harnesses and all the repair manuals I flip through don't cover the location of diesel components.

i agree its probably a cps.

i know a guy selling a complete pedal assy. for 80.00. he had 2 from cummins swaps. i bought one but he still has another as far as i know. let me know.

i suggest you go to a parts store and get your codes pulled first before buying anything.

Tps

Hay my truck was doing the exact same thing, but it was cps (camshaft position sensor) very easy to fix. (I am not a mechanic) so do a search on "cps" and you will find tons of info. good luck

P.S. if it is a cps don't buy it from ford, buy it at international.

the tps though is on the throttle pedal assembly for future reference.

The throttle position sensor and idle validation switches are mounted to the accelerator pedal assembly, but I agree with the forum...it's probably the camshaft position sensor.

I also think it's the CPS, camshaft position sensor. There's a "How to replace..." in the articles/specs section at the top of this web page, complete with part numbers. (Don't take the serpitine belt off) '97 was the serial number/part number change. Hardest thing is finding it the first time but cookie88's diagram is a big help. $180-200 at Ford dealership, about $110 at International dealership, $50-80 on ebay if you can wait that long. I think NAPA and Autozone also carry them now. I wouldn't wait too long because they have a tendency to die completely.

How would you test the CPS to see if it's dead?

I have a '96 F350 PSD that just won't start. I've replaced the fuel pump (bad), GPR (bad), and the glow plugs (5 bad, other 3 not good shape) and it still won't start. I have a charger on the battery and wait for a full charge and then crank it for 30 secs and it just won't turn over. I don't think there's smoke from the exhaust.

I've been reading up the past couple of days and tried everything that was posted here but I don't want to buy stuff that I don't need.

Sorry to threadjack.

bobby as you crank the enigne watch the tach. if it moves the cps is good if it doesn't move replace the cps. or get it scanned. but watching the tach is cheaper!!!

Just read that about 15 mins ago. It moves. I read sometimes it still goes bad.

I forgot to mention that I checked all the fuses (#22 in particular) and they're all good.

Any way to check the IDM?

Bobby try to plug it in for a few hours and charge the batteries and then try to start it..Mine started but only ran off of four cylinders on the passenger side..I checked it by unpluging the harness that goes to the valve covers (two on each side) It ended up being the IDM..Where do you live..If you are close by I will pull my IDM and let you see if that is the problem..

Thanks. I'm in Northern NJ (Tenafly).

I checked all the harnesses and they seem fine. I think it's the IDM after all this troubleshooting and reading on these forums. I guess I'll try to pick one up on eBay.
