Rebuliding a 76 360 and have heard that there are different chains based on year to advance or retard the timing. Is this true and can I tell what i just purchased.
thanks in advance
Yes it is true. Most (ALL ? ) of the chains for 72-73 or later are retarded. A set of chain and gears for a 70 model will give you straight up timing. I don't know if you can tell them apart by looking. DF
You can't tell by looking at them unless they are side by side. The dots are slightly diff position, but hard to tell. You could just by a perf. set with several diff keyways and degree the cam.
i think the earlier models were 4 degrees retarded. i tried to change my timing set when i rebuilt my motor, but the parts stores only listed the newer 4 degrees advanced timing set for all years. i found aftermarket sets with 3 keyways on the crank gear was the best way to go.
The newer sets are 4 deg retarded-for emissions help(won't help on an FE!!). The early sets for thru mid 60's should be straight up- not retarded or advanced.
Hi again
still looking for the timing set. I have found the zero "sets" but
I cannot find one that works with my two piece 76 fuel pump ecentric. The earlier sets have a different hub on the cam sprocket to work with the one piece. So I guess now the question is can I use an earlier fuel pump ecentric on the engine. All the "race sets" i have seen advertise list them fitting all the years so it looks like going to the earlier setup is expected or they do not think about the difference. hey guys thanks for the help already given.
I purchased a sealed power set and when comparing it with the my orginal set against the engine I see that the new set has the cam timing one tooth advance. So it appears that I am in the money. I did not find any info anywhere stating the my newly purchased was advanced.
