Angry Bogs down

I have an 83 e100 that has been running beautifully until yesterday. I was getting on the highway and the acceleration was fine until I hit about 50 mph. All of a sudden the engine just bogged down. No matter how much or how little gas I gave it I could not get it to go any faster then about 45. Even a gradual acceleration produced the same results. I pulled over and ran the engine up from idle to full pedal and everything seemed fine. Back on the highway and again I could not get it above 45 mph. I replaced the fuel filter, checked the fuel pump, distributer advance for functionality, timing, hoses for vacuum leaks, carb nuts for tightness, choke for functionality, manifold bolts for tightness, listened for leaks around manifold. Vacuum guage at idle is at a pretty solid 18. Carb is only 6 months old. EGR working and free of leaks. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

With a carb you may have a mechanical fuel pump. If so it is possible for a weak pump to keep up with demand only to a certain point. Had this happen on a 55 pontiac back in the 60's. I could drive around town but only about 50 mph on the highway. Some fuel pumps would leak fuel into the oil and not show up externally.

What you're saying makes sense. I checked the fuel pump by just disconnecting the hose, cranking and watching the fuel come out. I should use a pressure gauge but a new pump is so cheap I'll just replace it. It's a few years old anyway. I'll let you know how it goes.

I just replaced the Fuel Filter and still no change. I'm going to remove the carb and see how that looks.

I have the same problem with my 85f150.
Mine is also tempermental ,sometimes it will only
do 50mph other days it will bury the needle.
I think I will go for a carb change out. Even though
I am not convinced that is the problem.
Let us know if you solve the problem.

Turned out to be just plain stupidity. When I replaced the fuel filter last fall, it started leaking at the carb side so I wrapped some teflon tape around it and all was well. The next time I replaced it about a week before the trouble began, I screwed in a new filter without removing the teflon that was still in the carb. So, when I took the carb apart this weekend, guess what I found lodged in the valve?
