i found a 91 f150 regcab shortbed 2wd with a 300 l6 and a manual tranny. what i want is a street truck for cruising. the price is VERY right and it is in excellent condition
question is, can i swap out the 6 for a 351w (carbed) i understand the tranny will bolt up, what about motor mounts?
i want the swap b/c a v8 is simply more classic street rod than a 6 is.
Yes you can put a carbed intake on the efi 6. But don't you want a V8? First pull the 6 out. You will see where the 6 motor mounts are rivited to the frame. These must be cut out, or the 8 won't work, as the right mount is in the way of the 8's oil filter. Next, find some 8 mounts, and cut them out of the truck. Bolt them in your truck (the holes are already there). Now drop in your 351.
It isn't hard, but it isn't easy!!!.
There are a lot of things to do. Not just swap mounts and "drop in the 351".
You will have to change exhaust system, lengthen some lines, shorten others. Radiator won't cool a 351, plus the outlets are on wrong side.
You have to modify the throttle linkage, fuel lines, etc. youalso will have to make sure that your state will allow the swap due to pollution laws.
I really think you should search the archives to read about this swap first. There are lots of posts about it.
Lastly, if you really want a street runner, for all the effort, I would go to a stock 460.
L&L Products offers a great swap kit for this setup.
Of course I always also try to persuade swappers to keep the six!!.
There's some good advice, but i agree that for a street rod, a 6 doesn't sound like an 8. If you're set on the 8, there are some more things to do than just droping it in like i said above. With the 91, you will need to remove the in tank fuel pump, or get a pressure regulator (for a carb). The fuel line can be spliced into on the frame rail. The rad needs to be changed b/c the outlets are reversed for an 8 and a 6. The throttle cable must be changed (same hook-up on the pedal). You need to change your ignition system to work with your new carb'ed set up (new ignition box, new distributor, modified wiring harness etc. etc. ) I did the opposite project to my 91. EFI V8 out, Carb'ed 6 in. It can be done. Motor out and in isn't hard. Just a lot of details.
Keep your 6. The first classic hotrods were almost all sixes. The first Corvettes were sixes. Go to www.fordsix.com and see everything that can be done. I souped up my 300-6 ten years ago or so and I still love the way it runs and sounds. The difference in performance is almost unreal. It was like a completely different vehicle when I got done. I don't get single digit mileage either. And if the hood is open people can't believe their eyes, whereas who cares about another V8. By switching engines you are opening a big can of worms, that's why I didn't do it. If you want a V8 truck buy one. Much, much easier.
well i already have a v8 4x4. it is a 91 351 and i thought that if i was starting a project then it would be good to stick with an engine that i am familiar with. thanks for the link. i am getting interested in this 300 thing

I am contemplating the same thing here, could you possibly let me know everything that you have done to your six, the price and rated performance/horsepower.
