Air conditioning compressor click

Hi all,
I own a 93 ford f150 v8, I've noticed it in the past but recently its more noticable. The air conditioning compressor is clicking but the engine primes too. The engine priming/reving in park is getting more louder, its just prime - click, prime - click, prime - click. The steering wheel is shuddering with it. Any thoughts on whats causing this?
Thanks to anyone who can help!

~ Dan

If you mean the engine idle increasing slightly when the compressor clutch cycles, that is normal. If it's getting louder then I'd say the compressor may be getting harder to rotate which probably means it's fixin' to grenade itself. Don't let that happen or you'll get black death in your a/c system and have to replace ALL the components that make up the refrigerant loop.

Try turning the compressor shaft by hand, see how it feels. If you ain't sure then have a GOOD a/c shop look it over.

I would do as Dixie460 says. your air conditioning compressor is about to internally self destruct. That happens due to insufficient lubrication over time and if it breaks apart inside, every component of your air conditioning system except maybe the suction line and discharge line, will be trash.

the clicking is most likely the compressor clutch kicking in, and it will do that over and over if the amount of refrigerant is low. The shuddering if it is only when the air conditioner is on, is just as Dixie said, the compressor going bad.

Do keep in mind that the computer will bump up idle as the ac compressor is cycled on, with low refidgerant it will cycle on and off fast and screw with engine idle.

Just had the same problem...and in my case the compressor blew. So I now have a new AC system. Good news is that some of the items needed replacing anyway (dryer, condenser, orifice tube, etc). Key is a good AC shop, as identified above already.
