boost leak sound from tailpipe

Hey guys,

I have an early 2004 6.0 that i just redid the head gaskets on. While I had everything apart I installed new head gaskets with arp studs, New Ford hpop, New Ford oil cooler, rebuilt the turbo with a wicked wheel 2, installed the blue spring upgrade and a 5" exhaust with a 4" down pipe. The truck started up pretty easy when put back together but had a definite boost leak around the turbo and from the tail pipe. I assumed they were related and bought a new mbrp y pipe and new vband clamp. The boost leak is gone from the turbo but I still hear the "whooshing" sound from the tail pipe. It almost sounds like the " chugging" sound a straight piped 7.3 tailpipe if that makes sense to anyone. I don't have the air intake on yet or the all the clamps on the exhaust yet but I couldn't see how that would matter. I wondered if it was a bent pushrod or something and did some research and found that was a common problem on these but I triple checked everything putting it together and it runs and revs so Damn good I couldn't believe that it would be that. But this is my first time doing this on a 6.0 if anyone has any other ideas.

Thanks guys,
Thebluemule

These trucks have a whoosh/whistle from the tail pipe by nature. The wicked wheel will add to that, and exhaust mods will make it more noticeable. Especially if you went straight pipe.

My concern was that it is kind of " choppy" not a steady whistle. I might be over thinking it but just figured I'd ask. I also have a code for cylinder 5 balance problem. Maybe it is a misfiring injector if anything. But I have a fresh oil change with 5w-40 synthetic Schaffer oil and hot shot stiction remover to hopefully scrub things up.

Thanks guys,

Keep any other thoughts coming!

I do understand what you are talking about with the straight piped 7.3l. They sound like garbage to me and do sound choppy. Your 6.oh should NOT even sound close like that. Ever! I don't know what would cause that sound. But I don't believe changing the oil will do the trick. Although I do suggest a 5w oil over 15w on these diesels. Good luck and keep us informed as we do the same for you.

Thank you for the reply!! The "choppy" sound is at idle. I didn't know if maybe an injector has some stiction and the hot shot and 5w40 would help to clean them out. I'll keep you updated with what I find.

Thanks!

You know, I came across a video on youtubes many moons ago where the guy was having an injector issue and in the video he goes back by the exhaust and it has a "choppy" sound to it.

Soooo, I'd say maybe an injector especially because you are getting a code for the #5 cylinder.

Hopefully the Hot Shots and 5w40 will help. Gonna have to give it a few hundred miles to see if it clears it up.

It could be a bent push rod, did you turn the engine over by hand a few times before starting it?

The PCM doesn't know if it' a bent push rod or a miss firing injector or a hole in the piston. All it knows is there is a miss, or more accurately it's out of balance.

The way I think of injectors is they have two sides, an oil side on the top and a fuel side on the bottom. Sticktion on the oil side usually goes away once warmed up. If an injector starts to fail on the fuel side it could fail cold and /or warm.

Check the connector over well for that injector. Last time i had mine apart the wires backed out of the connector on my#7 injector. It was choppy and really noticeable if i held the brake and dropped it in gear. I climbed up and started wiggling. You could tell immediately when i touched the harness for #7.

Well I noticed I was missing the metal clip on the number 5 injector. I don't think it really mattered but I ordered one plus a couple spares from ford today. But I did notice that the "choppy whoosh" from the tail pipe sound goes away if I unplug the vgt sensor on the turbo . So maybe it's just the wicked wheel?? Any thoughts?

Thanks guys,

I'm interested to know how much of a "kick in the pants" the Wicked Wheel gave you?

Did you do a vgt relearn on it? Or have a tuner? I would try the relearn process and see if it helps.

Ok guys here's an update. I finally got a chance to drive the truck tonight... And I think there's good news and bad news.

The truck still has the choppy tailpipe idle and white smoke when revved in park. So I took it down the road and it covered the road in smoke. Hard to tell what color in the dark though. But I assumed some white smoke at the start after doing head gaskets might be normal. I am trying to purge the air out of the hpo system so I gave it some good punches and after the smoke cleared it took off like a rocket. I went about 4 miles and the truck died right before pulling into my driveway. I let the truck sit for 5 min and tried to start it...no luck. I then checked the oil, put 3 quarts in and it started after 10 sec of cranking.

I rebuilt the turbo myself and well, I'm starting to think I screwed up. Does my problem sound like a bad turbo seal now to you guys?? I am honestly thinking I screwed up my exhaust housing maybe when I installed the shaft with the new oil seal. It barely scuffed up the exhaust housing but I used a file to barely smooth it out. It wasn't much at all but maybe enough to cause all this b.s. ???

Thanks guys,
