I have read a good deal about flushing the coolant from a 7.3 Diesel and the procedure is pretty labor intensive. In the past, I have had good results using a flushing tee installed in the heater hose going from the heater core to the water pump and just following the instructions on the kit. Will this procedure work on a 1994 IDI Turbo? Will the entire cooling system be flushed using this technique?
You won't get a complete flush while the thermostat is installed. So at the very least, you'll want to remove the thermostat and re-install the housing to do the flush. And even if you use the method on the flushing tee package, you'll still want to drain the remaining water out of both block drains and the radiator drain, to get the tap water out of the system. For the water constituent of the coolant, you want as little tap water and as much distilled water in the system as possible.
Unlike oil or fuel, the coolant is going to be in the system for several years. The flush procedure is something you don't want to skimp on.
I know a number of members have said they use the T's you are mentioning and like them. I have a van so it is difficult to get to the heater core hoses.
Many suggestions here are to remove the block drain plugs and install brass drain***** to allow easier/cleaner coolant changes. When I did mine (It was about a year ago). I used some of the Prestone coolant flush. I followed the directions on the bottle. Before the final fill I drained the system using the drain on the radiator and removed the drain plugs in the block. Then I refilled the system with the correct ratio of coolant/SCA/Distilled water.
