Woke up to SNOW this morning. Not much accumulation on the ground yet but it's still coming down. Fine and steady. So much for my outdoor projects today.
Pat I hear what you're saying, the budget is the biggest hurdle for projects. Then of course there is the family project list that does not always align with my list.LOL
Oh, yeah. I entirely too well how that goes!! That's why I'm getting what I can while I have all of this overtime coming in. The misses can't really complain about me spending some of my OT!!LOL
Happy Thirsty Thursday Nevada FTE and friends. We got a couple of hours of rain this morning, but it looks to be clearing up now. Still, I'll take whatever rain the good Lord wants to send down to us.
It may not solve the drought problem, but it snowed all freaking day. Still coming down.
The snow lightened up this afternoon so I did manage to get some work done.
I have been working on building a kiln enclosure. Weatherproof and fireproof. I am trying to make it with all non-combustibles. I bought some panels, the type you can apply tile to. It's a new product that I have not seen before. I better check before I use it, I was assuming that it won't burn. I will give it a little test with a propane torch. But my idea was, for the walls and door to make metal frames and then make panels to fit with this new material. I bought some of that aluminum "expanded metal" that I will cover the inside and outside with. Then give it a light coating of stucco..
It is a small structure just three feet by six feet. Just room for the kiln (24" diameter,) a couple of shelves for supplies and tools and some materials.
One side of the building is concrete block. I took out a rotten RR tie retaining wall to put in the block. One small end is against my garage wall. That has wood siding. So I applied som Hardi backer on spacers, giving me 3/4" airspace. Then I set some 16" tiles that were on sale for a buck apiece. I bought too many. It took less than half of what I bought. Maybe I will put the rest on my retaining wall. Goes fast when you are setting such large tiles.
So three corners are pretty well nailed down. Today I drilled through the asphalt, a series of holes in an ell shape. I had some of that cement used for putting handrail posts in concrete. I made the hold oversized and used my hammer drill and a big vacuum to hollow out space for ten pounds of this cement product and poured it in. I put my fence post level on my 2" angle iron, plunged it in there a little over a foot and got it all squared up and plumb. They say that stuff sets up in thirty minutes.
About that time the wind came up and it started snowing like a *******. I quickly got all my gear covered up or inside. Went back and my angle iron was not moved by the wind. So I have been inside ever since. I hope that stuff works.
We have a few inches of snow, even though it has snowed pretty much all day long, the temperature has been in the upper thirties. Tomorrow will be interesting.
I vaguely remember the tv weatherman saying there was a small possibility of snow today, but that was only above 6,000 feet. I am at 6,250. Oh well, have a nice evening.
Sounds like you have been busy. Too bad that snow doesn't come this way, we could use that too. Last I heard the local ski resorts only received 8% of their usual snow this year.
I didn't ski at all. A lot of my more hard core friends did. When you pay for a pass you just have to get up there and try it out. But when the snow is this poor, not all the runs will be open. So everyone who shows up are all packed into the few runs that are available. Not that much fun......... when you feel crowded that feeling of freedom just isn't there.
