Tranny talk

Pulled my radiator today, and the fluid was clear, but had a brown tint to it. Also, it has what appeared to be an external filter on the tranny lines on the frame rail on the passenger side under the radiator. It appears that this filter housing hasn't been opened in a VERY long time. Truck has 221k on the clock, and the new motor will have a significant uptick in power.

What are the odds that I should just grab a buildable core, have it rebuilt, and installed when the new engine goes in?

What mods and improvements should be done to the trans before putting a hot motor in front of it? I'll be getting my tunes from Matt at Gearhead. I understand that his tunes can help the tranny a bit.

By the subject line I'll give you this.
Bruce Jenner.

But really you could get a core then have Ed get you a FORD reman
I got one heck of a deal. The cost was less than the one online dealer
we used to have here and the shipping was at a good price also.
Fast too. We got the trans and put it in the truck and then I shipped
back a core that I picked up here for about $250.00 to send back for my
core fee of $1000.00 One of these days I'll get that video posted.
They do send a new oil to air cooler but the oil to coolant cooler will need
to be flushed along with the lines and filter housing. The reman trans comes
pre filled with fluid.

BTW You can do the install and still have a full Ford warrantee. If you
have one rebuilt look into having all the "Sun Gears" TIG welded.
Mine broke the weld on the coast clutch and left me stranded.

That filter is a factory installed tranny filter and should be changed every 30,000 miles along with the tranny fluid. Use only Mercon SP or LV fluis.

So I found this core for $50.00 from a friend that just needs some stuff gone from behind his shop.

RF3C3P-7006-AG

My hypothesis is that it came out of a 450/550, and was equipped with the parking brake assembly mounted on the tailshaft adaptor.

My experience on the older 450/550 trucks is that the E-brake tailshaft adaptor can be removed, and a transfer case will bolt right up for use in a 4X4. Is this still the case? Do I have a good builder here?

Most 5R110 transmissions were built in the 4x4 configuration. As I recall only E-Series and a very few F-Series had a 4x2 slip yoke.

Yes there are. And their transmissions are the 4x4 configuration. There is no slip yoke on the trans, there is a flange that the driveshaft is bolted to. The slip yoke is in the middle of the driveshaft.

Mark is the difference the output shaft and the addition
of the tail housing Vs the transfer case?
