I'm the new guy that after 50 years of Chevrolets just bought my first Ford a 79 F-350 4x4. My truck is said to have an 87 460 in it. How do I confirm this and where are the numbers on the engine that I need to look for? There is a sticker on the pass. side valve cover with info.

Congratulations on coming to the light. And welcome to FTE - you'll find lots of helpful people here. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your '79 once you get a chance to post 'em!
Personally, not sure on the engine ID info - though if you post what you've got, someone may be able to help - we have a few dealer parts guys who frequent the forum.

Your F350 4WD originally came with a 351M or 400. Both have 8 valve cover bolts per side, 460's have 7.
1983 was the first year that Ford offered the 460 with 4WD and M/T .. F250/350 only.
The 460 block casting number for some 1979's, 1980/97's is D9TE-6015-AB/ This 460 is externally balanced (has a weighted crank spacer).
Some1979's, 1971/78 460 block casting number is D1VE-6015-AB/ This 460 is internally balanced as are 1968/70's.
1968 block casting number prefix is C8VE .. 1969 isC9VE .. 1970 is D0VE
The block casting numbers are located on the rear of the engine, behind the starter motor with the head numbers on side of heads near 2nd or 3rd exhaust ports...
The cylinder head casting numbers are located on the outside of the head, along the valve cover mounting rail and between the 3rd and 4th exhaust ports. The are visible simply by raising the hood and looking at the engine. You should be able to find a cast-in alphanumeric number, possibly one of the following:
C8VE-E
C9VE-A
D0VE-C
D2VE-AA
D3VE-A2A
Or, it may appear similar to one of the above numbers but a little different.
The block casting number is located on the ouside of the engine, at the rear of the cylinder bank, behind the starter motor and reads vertically. There, you should be able to find a cast-in alphanumeric number, possibly one of the following:
C8VE-B
C9VE-B
D0VE-A
D1VE-A2B
D9TE-AB
Or, it may appear similar to one of the above numbers but a little different.
I guess the numbers on the heads are under the valve covers ? The numbers on the block arn't very clear , all I can really read are E-AB. There is a sticker on the drivers side valve cover with some info.

Compared to Chevrolet, Ford's casting scheme is pretty simple to follow. The first character, in your case "E" denotes the decade, 80-89 for E.
The second character is the year of the decade, so E7 for instance, is 1987. the D0VE heads refered too earlier, are from 1970-1971
Ford doesn't change casting numbers until the part is revised. So you won't see, E2, E3, E4... Just E4, E7, whenever changes are made. So it was D0VE until the 1972 heads came, then D2VE, so on and so forth
