Locating 460 Engine Numbers
I have an 85 F350 that originally had a diesel. Someone put a 460 in it before I purchased it. The engine needs some work (overheating, leaking oil, etc., enough for another post). I certainly don't consider myself a mechanic and don't know where to locate the numbers on the engine. I would like to get this info so I can determine the year of the motor and then I can (hopefully) locate parts. I had an old IH Scout II that was a learning experience and I guess this will be as well. Apparently most of the parts are the same for all years but some things changed along the way. While I am at it, I would also like to determine which manual tranny I have so any help in that aspect would be appreciated.
Thanks,
The numbers could look like: c8ve, c9ve, d0ve,d1ve,d2ve,d3ve,and on. these numbers could be followed by other letters {A2A, ect.} that represent different things, I do not have the typing skill to go into depth. You can buy a book to understand more.
To explain the numbers that I have gave you and the other ones that would be simular, here is the date break down.
The first letter is the decade.
The second spot is a number that is the year of the decade.
C=60'S
D= 70'S
E= 80'S
F= 90'S
Examples: C9VE = 69
D0VE =70
D1VE =71
D2VE = 72
D3VE = 73
ECT.
This is to get you started, I am sure there is somebody that will know how to better explain it to you and some that will critise it all.
Also if you rebuild your engine the 429/460 is hard to tell apart. The crank number, and the 429 casted on the pistons is the only way I know to visually tell them apart unless you still have a factory sticker.
As far as your trans. I do not know much on manual trans. indentification.
Good luck.
