Turn Engine by Hand?

Just replaced the head gaskets on a 1990 2.9L Ranger. I am ready to adjust the valve lash but when I try to turn my engine by hand, it started to go a little past TDC but now won't turn without popping back in place as soon as I let up pressure. I back out the adjuster screws on the rocker arms almost completely but not sure why this is happening. I did not take the fan off so I am only turning about 90 degrees from underneath the vehicle. Please help!

I can also add that one head was fine and was resurfaced while the other was cracked so I replaced it with a re-manufactured unit.

Figured it out, I'll leave this up for future reference in case anyone has the same issue... Truck was in gear... Put it back in neutral and can turn the crank with 1 finger!
