If he's a lucky dog he might also have one that someone added a Gear Vendors unit to.
You can ID the transmission by the shape of the pan on it. Due to your vans ages I would say they are either AOD or C6. But someone could have also swapped them out for something else in the past.
Here's a couple pics to help.
Have the 302 and transmission out of the 83 getaway and in the back of the 85club wagon
I checked the pan and it matches the AOD thanks for those.
Your 351W will have the C6 that's the only 3 spd auto they used in that age.
Using the AOD will make it a much simpler engine swap. Even though the C6 is a stronger transmission.
You can use the the AOD on the 351W. But make sure to use the flexplate that's on the 351W. It will have a difference balance weight ( 28 oz. ) then the 302's ( 50 oz ) . Just make sure to compare it to the 302's flexplate tooth count. I'm almost positive the AOD's were 164 tooth like the C6. So the 351W's flexplate should work fine just double check it before you bolt on the transmission.
And just to be safe I would also use the block spacer plate ( the plate between the flexplate and block ) off the 302. It locates the starter. It should be the same as the C6 plate but I would use the AOD plate just to be safe. Just make sure to use some red loctite on the flexplate bolts when you reinstall them.
And make sure the torque convertor is seated all the way into the transmission before you bolt up the transmission. Check it by lifting on the center pilot support, while pushing in and spinning the torque convertor by one of the studs. If it's not seated all the way you will destroy the transmission pump when you bolt up the transmission.

Yea see this is why I wanted to do the engine and transmission swap together without separating them.
It's not that bad. Swapping the transmission over to the 351W is pretty simple. A lot less hassle then swapping the C6 into an AOD equipped van. There is a little information you need to know on the stuff. But after that it's pretty simple. Especially if you bolt them together outside the van!

No problem, glad I could give some help.
I will be bolting them together outside the van. With the info you gave me , it should go OK.
Had a little trouble with the transmission mount today. I will have the 351 out in the morning and start switching transmissions.
if that is the correct shift indicator/steering column for your van someone may have put the 5.8 into it. I've been through a lot of vans and trucks and have never seen an AOD behind a 351W OEM. rare behind a carbed 302 even. have a roll under and take a pic of your trans pan
you could always do a VIN decode, there is one here somewhere . I have it saved in my favorites when somebody is trying to sell me a Ford that sounds fishy.

The AOD was behind a 302 not the 351. His 351 had the C6.
