if that is the correct shift indicator/steering column for your van someone may have put the 5.8 into it. I've been through a lot of vans and trucks and have never seen an AOD behind a 351W OEM. rare behind a carbed 302 even. have a roll under and take a pic of your trans pan
you could always do a VIN decode, there is one here somewhere . I have it saved in my favorites when somebody is trying to sell me a Ford that sounds fishy.
cheers
I looked at the transmission pans. The Donor is a 85 351 4brl c6 transmission
My getaway van is 83 302 AOD. Both are all original.
OK I have some pertinent input, DO NOT under any circumstances bolt that AOD and 351 together with the C6 flexplate or you will destroy the trans the first time it is fired. The C6 flexplate has too much front-back offset which pushes the TC back into the pump causing metal on metal grinding which sends shavings throughout the trans. Very BAD. To use this combo you need a flexplate from a mid '80's crown vic that had a 351/AOD combo, that is a 28oz 164 tooth flexplate.
Now.. the AOD isn't the most stout trans in the world and early versions like this were particularly weak, I suggest you install a shift kit to firm up the notoriously slushy shifts and also upgrade to a Lokar TV cable if your truck came with a linkage rod assembly. This TV adjustment controls line pressure in the trans and it is critical that it be set right to prevent clutches and bands from slipping.
I'd also caution against using the AOD at all if this truck has anything less than 3.55 gearing, 3.73 to 4.10 would be optimal considering the size and weight of this vehicle, higher(numerically lower) gearing puts too much load on the trans in OD and it just won't last very long.

None of this is good news. I already separated the 351 and C6 and I broke the transmission lines removing the 351 from the van.

The AOD is original in the Getaway Van behind the 302. The transmission was tight and smooth on the shiftfor 2 years touring Saskatchewan. I started in SK with 75000km and headed for Halifax. The engine and transmission ran perfect for 3000km. Through the mountains in northern Ontario, no problem.

Can I use the flexplate from the 302 AOD setup? This is the original AOD Transmission and flexplate in the 83 E250 getaway van, bolting to the 351.
Thanks for joining this thread Conanski, your knowledge and input is a big help.
Thanks everyone, with your help I may be get this thing on the road again.
BTW.. you can find the rear axle gearing by finding the axle code on the drivers door pillar calibration decal and then cross referencing that with charts found here or in the owners manual, post up what you find and I can help source the correct info. The link below is good for some trucks but may not be accurate for earlier or later trucks.
