390-445 build up.

Alright here we go..

Today I started the build on my project, which is a 390 based 445 stroker with a four speed toploader into a '65 F100 swb.
I would love to post pictures (if I learn how) and make the a forum- involved build if y'all are willing, because I know I'm going to have lots of questions, and frankly am very excited to do this.

First question, can a tech savvy member walk me through how to upload pictures?
I know I'm not the first to do this project, I'm excited to hear others stories and how my own goes.

Tech question, when assembling piston/rods, are the rods directional? Or doesn't it matter, there wasn't any literature on it with the box.

I'm also curious how everyone else gaps their rings, I was planning on being old fashioned with a file because I'm having a hard time justifying buying the tool for it.

Sounds like a cool project!

I have 3 FE Powered '66 F100 myself.

I did a 482 stroker for one and now in middle of a 418 FE for another truck.

Best for photo's is getting a PhotoBucket or other hosting account.
Then its just copy and paste of the link.

If you do a search there will be a more detailed way post on how to link the photo's.

For starters until you figure it out I can post them for you by email etc

In the past I had quite a few issue's with PhotoBucket but it seems to be working ok now, just a occasional glitch.

If you have photobucket

Just click on link by photo where it says [IMG]http and it will copy

Then go to your reply box and hit control v and it will place the link.

Or you can just click using mouse.

you get this

When link is posted it ends up like this:

The piston will be marked Front or a dot etc,

Yes it makes a difference how the rod goes on piston. The bearing tang indentation goes towards outside of engine.

Also take a look at your rods and the orientation to the crank for each bank.

If you put a bearing in the rod note side to side there is more room for radius of crank. Always a way to double check.

Did you buy .005 over file fit rings? It would be near impossible to get perfect gaps using a file, ring gap filing tools are cheap and plentiful.

Even with a ring filing tool it has to be held proper to make it square . .

Just so you are aware. If running a toploader 4spd the truck bellhousing will not work, different height. You will need a passenger car bellhousing.

What dimension specifically are you referring to with "different height"?
I have a couple bellhousings, but would assume they are all truck ones, but bolt up fine the the trans.

Great info, thanks for this!
I'll be assembling piston/rods tomorrow, and will look into a ring filing tool. Any suggestions on a specific one?

I should have said the depth.

Input shaft length differences.

So you have a true toploader out of a car?

Glad you posted your build, I will be watching this thread, I have a FE that needs a rebuild and might as well stroke it. My brother has one as well. Sounds like you got your kit from Barry - Survivor? Really interested to hear how it goes for you, I have been reading a lot of good stuff about Barry at Survivor
