new no start problem

Hey all

I was working on my truck today (hooking up a new tach) and when I went to go start it after the installation it would turn over but not fire. Here is what I have gathered so far:

It will run roughly with starter fluid
It is getting fuel at the carb from the fuel line

240 six, stock ignition with the exception of a pertronix type points conversion

I'm not sure where to go from here it terms of narrowing it down. Any help or pointers would be welcome.
Thanks

Have you tried unhooking the tach to see if it will start? But what is confusing is why it runs on starter fluid. That means the problem is with fuel delivery from the carburetor.

Yes I unhooked the tach from the negative coil terminal which is the only direct connection to the engine.
It was running fine on Sunday which is why its so strange that it suddenly won't start.

Ok, that rules out the tach. What normally will confuse anyone is a new problem popping up after you install something. Next thing to check would be the fuel filter. Or look down the throat of the carb and open the throttle to see if the accelerator pump is putting out a squirt of fuel. That will determine if there is fuel in the bowl.

OK thanks. Obviously I can only see if the accelerator pump is working if someone else is cranking correct?

No need to crank the engine to see the accelerator pump work. It's also not safe to look down the throat of a carburetor while you are trying to start an engine. Just open the throttle with the engine off, and watch for fuel.

OK thanks. One other question - when I am pulling on the throttle linkage should it be opening the throttle plate too, or does that only work if the engine is running?
Sorry for the newb questions. carburetors are sort of a black hole for me :-)

Yes, if you pull on the cable or just twist the connection on the side of the carb you will be opening the throttle. You may need to get the upper choke plate open first to be able to see down the throat of the carb.

I cut my teeth on fuel injected beemers...way back in the early 80's.

Signing off for the night, someone else may be of some help or I'll be back in the morning.

You should also verify that the fuel pump is working by disconnecting the line at the carb and connecting a rubber line to run it into a bucket. Crank the engine for about 30 seconds and make sure you have plenty of fuel in the bucket. I don't have a spec for how much, but it should probably be at least a pint or more.

Well I double checked the fuel delivery at the carb and its good. I looked down the throat and worked the throttle and didn't see any fuel coming out at all so I suspect its the accelerator pump like you suggest. I'll be looking for a reman carb tomorrow.
The fuel injection is nice when it works but certainly can be a tricky (like everything else BMW) when things go wrong....
Thanks!

Make sure you are getting fuel from the pump to the carb to be sure it's not a fuel pump issue.

Stupid question but it happens, did you run out of gas?

EDIT: nevermind, I just re-read and saw where you were getting fuel to the carb.

I doubt it since it does run on starting fluid.
