AAAH. I'm thinking starting fluid fires easier than gas. I.E. takes less spark. If the problem came about directly after installing a tach then this has to be related. Did the wires accidentally get reversed on the coil? Wire from ign switch goes to "+" terminal and "-" terminal goes to Dizzy.
Anything else done same time as the Tach? Like hooking up pertonix or something?
I thought about that and retraced my steps but I don't see how the two could be related. The only new wire was from the negative terminal on the coil to the tach itself. All the other tach wiring was in the cab. I didn't disconnect any of the other wires on the coil and didnt touch the dizzy.
It will fire and run rough with the starting fluid which tells me its still getting spark so I didn't fry the coil or Pertronix unit.
Well I double checked the fuel delivery at the carb and its good. I looked down the throat and worked the throttle and didn't see any fuel coming out at all so I suspect its the accelerator pump like you suggest. I'll be looking for a reman carb tomorrow.
The fuel injection is nice when it works but certainly can be a tricky (like everything else BMW) when things go wrong....
Thanks!
Yes it's good you got gas ? Then now you don't have gas?
I hope you first checked the fuel pump out put before Assuming it's the carb.
that needs replacing.
If not this is how a newbie ends up with a box of good used working extra parts.
If you don't have a manual for how to fix your trucks engine plus testing for good parts it's high time to buy one and it will save you money and time waiting for an answer on the forum..

Good advice. I did test the pump - disconnected it at the carb and cranked the motor and lots of fuel came out. I also followed the advice above on checking for a spray from the accelerator pump and didn't see anything.
Thanks
Hooking up a tach is way too simple. Positive wire to coil "-" terminal and the other to a ground. So there should be no reason after doing that the rig has a problem. So was there anything else done to the rig same time as the Tach? Power wash engine, plug wires, etc.

If there was nothing else electrical messed with at the same time then my low spark firing the starting fluid thought is invalid. So it does have to be the carb's plugged up and not letting fuel through. Curious as how this happened the same time you installed a tach. Since it is not driving now anyways you might take the top off the carb and look in the fuel bowl for traces of what plugged the carb. Example would be little pieces of rubber from the Inside of old fuel hoses, old fuel filter media, etc. Put it back together for a good core.
Plus forgot to ask do you have a fuel/gas filter inline any where, if not good time to install one. Some carb have a little one that threads into the carb.
Best to put a larger one inline or some fuel pumps have the canister at the bottom that many guys don't know it's their and never gets changed..
I took the carb off this morning and took the top off. First thing I noticed was that the bowl was empty which is telling me the fuel isn't getting in even though the pump is still working. I couldn't see anything that would suggest a blockage. I tried to gently blow the fuel inlet out with compressed air to try to clear any small debris. I put everything back together and put the carb back on and still no start.
I recently changed the canister filter on the pump but the truck still ran after I did so so I'm not thinking that the cause.
Oh, well. I'm going to try the new carb when it arrives and cross my fingers.
Put some fuel in that bowl and try to start it again. To do this slowly pour some gas in the bowl's vent tube. If you take the air cleaner back off you will see this bowl vent tube top of the throat of the carb.

I'd inspect the filter as it to being installed correctly or I seem to remember them having a spring in the bottom holding the filter up in place. Or it's been done away with..
