i might be little late but, was the float level set right?was the float stuck, blocking the bowls inlet? if you had very little fuel in the bowl it may have been closing too soon. also you should install and inline fuel pressure gauge before the inlet of the carb to see if you're getting proper pressure. Check the vent to see if that's clogged too.
Another thing to watch out for is bad fuel. If you have had fuel in a tank for over 6 months and the weather has been cold. Todays gas blends tend to accumulate water and will not fire right. Make sure to add some stabil if you don't drive it a lot.
Jets can get clogged easily like the other posters said. Take all the jets out, restrictors, and clean them out until you see light through the little holes. And blast all the passages with carb cleaner till it comes out the other side of the passage---WATCH YOUR EYES!!!
One other thing. Make sure you have a good-clean- ground going from the battery to the chassis, and the chassis to the engine-and if you wan to overkill it from the chassis to the body, but the body bolts should do it. Bad grounds cause all kinds of headaches.
