I've done the DSII conversion to my 84 f250 5.8 and was wondering if anything else should be changed--like thermostat temp, to go better with the older ignition? I have 195 now. Or will it matter, without any emissions. Or switch to 180 because cooler is better?
Depends on the climate you live in. If you're in a cooler climate a Motorcraft RT1139 192* thermostat would be best. And that's an OE thermostat, nice quality. They can be found as cheap as $12 on eBay. If you live in the south a 180* thermostat would be better. Also depends on if you have a good radiator or not. I would not recommend buying a parts store 180*. Or, a parts store thermostat period. I purchased a Motorad ultrastat 180* and it acted like a 160* thermostat with my 2 core aluminum radiator. I've found other people saying the same thing about those. I'm running a Motorcraft 192* now. Works perfectly.
A 180* Motorcraft brand thermostat is part number RT-351.
These engines were designed to run at 195, so I'd leave the 'stat alone. Cooler just means it takes a lot longer to heat the oil and boil off the condensation. And, friction is higher at the lower temps.
No. All the manufacturers found that the engines were more efficient at the higher temps. And, the higher temp dispels the moisture from the oil. So, better in all ways.
In fact, all the engines had 195 thermostats, even those w/o the thermal switches.
