Disc wear pattern

I hope this is the appropriate forum for my question:

2002 Navigator - looking at the brake disc, the area that is shinny from the pads contacting the disc, is only about an inch wide and pretty much centered in the swept area of the disc.

I have pulled the calipers and cleaned and checked the slider pins, the brake pads look flat as do the disc wear surface, but they only seem to get shinny in the center of the wear area. I'd a thought my pads were only an inch wide based on the shinny area but the pads look normal.

Seems all vehicles that I've eye balled looking through the wheel spokes the whole swept area is shinny.

Any thoughts as to what causes this?
