Front disc brake question

Replaced the front disc pads today on an 89 Ford Ranger SuperCab with 2 wheel drive. The pads removed were NAPA's best. The driver's side were worn but rotor was in great shape. The passenger side had disc scoring on the outboard side, inboard side OK. The caliper does not seem to be sticking or frozen and I am puzzled. Past experience has always had more wear on the inboard side where the caliper piston is located. Is this a fluke, or any thoughts on why the inboard side is OK and the damage is on the outboard side? The outer pad was relatively evenly worn, but down to the rivet at one end. If I had checked the pads a couple of thousand miles ago it would have probably prevented the rotor damage.

Scott,

It's possible a stone could have gotten lodged between the outboard pad and rotor and could have dug into the rotor.
